Forum on Expository Preaching

Date

Time

Description

Dr. AndrusThe unique thrust of this year’s Forum on Expository Preaching will be the use of formal and informal logic in preaching. Our expositor, Dr. Michael P. Andrus, has been an EFCA pastor in Wichita and St. Louis for the past 36 years. However, he had a prior career teaching logic on the college level for five years. He will try to demonstrate, through lecture and preaching, how a knowledge of logic can play a significant role in exposition, as it did in the biblical author’s writing. One sermon, entitled "The Logic of the Resurrection," will focus on Paul’s heavy use of hypothetical syllogisms in the didactic text of 1 Corinthians 15:12-34. The second sermon, "Light for Blind Eyes" from John 9, will highlight the biblical author’s employment of informal fallacies as a way of bringing humor and irony into a narrative text.

The lunch break will be from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. There are restaurants on the conference grounds for you to purchase your own lunch and fellowship with other attendees. The second sermon will begin promptly at 1:30.

Speaker: Dr. Michael P. Andrus is lead pastor of First EFC of Wichita, Kansas. He has served the church twice, from 1975 to 1984 and from 2004 to the present. In the intervening 20 years he was the first pastor of a spontaneous church plant in St. Louis. Under his leadership First EFC of St. Louis became the mother church of a number of church plants and church adoptions now totaling over 6000 in weekly attendance. During his first term of service in Wichita two daughter churches were established, West EFC and East EFC. There are now a dozen churches in the greater Wichita area, including Chinese and Hispanic congregations. Dr. Andrus is a member of the Gospel Coalition Council. He has served as moderator of the EFCA and on many denominational boards, including the Board of Regents at Trinity International University. He has been married to Jan for 47 years; they have two adult children and five grandchildren.
